Liddell Says He Wasn't Ready To Retire But Was Right Decision
By Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Many of the greats that helped build the sport of MMA to what it is today have since taken the path of retirement as the game continued to evolve.

One such fighter is former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell who discussed his retirement at a recent Q&A session in Brazil:

"I talked to my family, my coaches, and then I went to Dana," said Liddell said. "I talked to Dana. Dana and I actually went to dinner, and he thought I was going to ask him to fight again. I came to dinner, and I said, 'You know what? I'm done.' He was relieved."

"Obviously he had made comments that he didn't want me to fight again. He was relieved, and then I asked him to just hold off for about three months and give me some time to get adjusted to it before I have to talk to people about it because it was a hard decision for me.

"I love fighting, and I didn't want to stop, but it was the right decision at the time between my coaches and my family."

There appears to be only one thing left that would bring Liddell back in the cage.

"I'd always like to hit Tito," Liddell joked. "That would always be fun, so that's a possibility, but I don't think that's going to happen.

"I think I made the right decision in retiring. Shogun Rua Details Training With Freddie Roach For UFC 161
By Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

UFC Light Heavyweight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua has an important bout at UFC 161 when he faces Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in Winnipeg, Manitoba in two weeks and because of that he enlisted the help of renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach to help him prepare.

The former champ talked about his time with Roach leading up to the bout:

"I started training with Freddie Roach because my manager contacted him and his team. For me this is good because I learned some things that can make the difference against Rogerio Nogueira. I was always confident in my boxing. In camp, I always train a lot of boxing. But Freddie showed me specific details that will help me improve my game. I am going to go back to Brazil and keep practicing what I learned and hope to apply it to the fight. He is a south paw and that already makes him harder to deal with. Nogueira is a guy that likes to setup his jab to throw his left hand. I know this and I am going to be prepared when we step inside the Octagon."

Leave your feedback on this article by posting a comment directly below! Southern, Alvey, Harris Lead Pack Of Winners at MFC 37
The Maximum Fighting Championship debuted its bantamweight division at MFC 37: True Grit on Friday night, and the result was one of the greatest fights in the history of the company.

A furious and fast-paced thriller between Anthony Birchak and Ryan “Baby Face” Benoit yielded several submission attempts, punishing strikes, and devastating ground-and-pound throughout a 15-minute battle for the ages at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.

The fight was a brilliant display of resiliency by both fighters as each had their moments to secure victory only to see it slip away and give their opponent an opening.

The packed house and fans watching live on AXS TV Fights were treated to a stellar showing that finally produced a unanimous decision verdict in favor of Birchak (10-1), who not only earned his fourth straight win but also claimed a title shot and a chance to become the inaugural MFC bantamweight world champ. Birchak, who hails from Tucson, Arizona, will fight for that crown later in 2013.

Benoit (6-2) had his own four-fight winning streak snapped but it wasn’t without a heroic effort from the product of Dallas, Texas.

Former MFC middleweight title contender “Smilen” Sam Alvey moved right back into the title picture as he finished off veteran Jay Silva at 1:05 of the third round. Alvey (20-5), who fights out of Temecula, California, nearly ended things midway through Round 2 with flurry before finally turning the lights out on Silva’s night with another heavy-handed barrage. Silva (8-8) needlessly protested the stoppage as it was evident he’d been put away by Alvey, who earned the Knockout of the Night.

The Submission of the Night was a walk in the park for Kurt “The Hurt” Southern, whose wrestling acumen paved the way to a tidy victory over Mukai Maromo.

Southern (12-4) scored a pair of impressive takedowns in the opening moments and never let the feared striking abilities of Maromo get unveiled. Southern negotiated his way into a North-South choke and eventually coaxed the tapout from Maromo at 2:54 of Round 1. In an unusual twist, Southern mirrored the same result over Maromo (8-4) that felled the “Afrikan Assassin” in his last outing – a third-round loss by North-South choke to Graham Spencer in their MFC world lightweight title bout at MFC 36.

And with Spencer focusing on a future in the featherweight ranks, Southern put the call out for a rematch against Jonatas Novaes, who bested him by third-round armbar at MFC 36, but this time the return encounter would be for the MFC’s lightweight crown.

Also registering an impressive submission win at MFC 37 was hometown hero Luke “Hayabusa” Harris. The St. Albert, Alberta, product masterfully utilized his judo black belt skills, tossing Jason Zentgraf to the mat in the early going, and then positioning himself for a display of his jiu-jitsu talents. Harris (10-2) needed all of 2:21 to end it, picking up the 10th first-round submission of his career with a unique neck-crank choke from side control. The loss was the first in the MFC for Zentgraf (7-2) and brought a halt to his four-fight winning streak.

For the first time in organizational history, the Maximum Fighting Championship aired preliminary bouts streaming live on Facebook, with the infamous “Brother vs. Brother” matchup the highlight of the MFC 37 undercard. In the end it was younger brother Thomas Treadwell scoring the victory over older sibling Mike Treadwell with a submission due to strikes at 2:22 of Round 1.

Other results:

Peter Neufeld (7-3) def. Garrett Nybakken (5-6) – Unanimous decision
Allen Hope (8-10) def. Paul Grandbois (5-6) – TKO, 1:54 Round 2
Jared McComb (5-2) def. Marcus Hicks (14-22) – Tapout via rear-naked choke, 3:09 Round 1
Maged Hammo (5-2) def. Allan Munroe (5-5) – Tapout via rear-naked choke, 2:53 Round 1

Leave your feedback on this article by posting a comment directly below! Anthony Pettis Calls Nate Diaz An Easy Payday
By Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Anthony Pettis has a future shot at UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo in his sights but took the time out this week to respond to a recent challenge from UFC lightweight/welterweight Nate Diaz:

"I heard his interview and it just makes me laugh. I mean, the guy just got head kick knocked out by a pretty good striker, but for him to call me out it's funny to me because my striking is one of the best in the lightweight division.

I think he's trying to keep his name relevant and trying to stay in the mix, but I mean after losing like that it's - there's not much more you can do in the lightweight division. I think he's going to be moving back to welterweight and again, the comments are funny to me and if he does want to fight I'll take an easy payday."

Check out more in the video below:

Leave your feedback on this article by posting a comment directly below! Chris Weidman Talks Anderson Silva Match Up
By Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Chris Weidman has made it clear that he is the man to dethrone Anderson Silva, and although it took some time before the UFC brass agreed and granted him a shot at the UFC Middleweight title, Weidman looks to take advantage of the situation when he steps in the cage with one of the greatest of all time in July.

He spoke about why he feels he'll win the fight this week in an interview with MMAJunkie.com:

"I've seen what Chael has done to him," Weidman said. "I've seen his weaknesses, and I think I can expose him again and look for a finish or a good performance. You've just got be confident. You can say anything you want before the fight, but it's all about when you touch those gloves, do you still have the confidence? I'm going to make sure I do."

"I think the best thing that Anderson Silva does is mentally destroy people before they even get in the cage with him," he said. "And then once you get in the cage with him, he does a great job of making you feel like, 'You do not belong in the cage with me. You're terrible. I'm the man. You're going to find a way out of this fight.' I think the biggest thing is that I'm very confident. I know my skill set."

"On paper, I'm a nightmare matchup for Anderson," Weidman said. "On paper you can't deny it. I definitely have better wrestling, and I believe I've proven I have better jiu-jitsu. I think I have the cardio and the athleticism. I think there's a lot of stuff that's siding with me in this fight."

Leave your feedback on this article by posting a comment directly below! Sonnen Has No Plans To Retire, Wants Wanderlei Silva
By Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Following a stoppage loss to UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones at UFC 159 this past weekend, the question as to whether Chael Sonnen should retire or not came into the lime light.

Sonnen spoke about the possibility of retiring while on UFC Tonight Tuesday evening and let it be known he won't be going anywhere:

"I will definitely continue – and at 205 pounds, unless they come up with a catchweight. They have a couple of people that do that. I know Rich Franklin has fought at catchweights a bunch, but I'm not going to be in contendership anytime soon, and neither is Rich Franklin or a pool of other guys. So there is a little bit of room where we could meet in the middle. Now that I've dropped Rich's name, this wasn't my way of challenging Rich. I was speaking to the point of the catchweight situation. I'm going to stick around."

"I'd rather give up the size but have a smile on my face."

On wanting to face Wanderlei Silva: "I'm not leaving this sport. Sonnen Feels Jones Is Better Than SIlva

"I think Jon is considerably better than Anderson."

"Look, here's the reality with Anderson," Sonnen said. Bisping: No One WIll Give A S@8& about Belchar After UFC 159
By Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Middleweight contenders Michael Bisping and Alan Belchar will square off against each other this weekend at UFC 159 and in the lead up to their bout have not held back on sharing their thoughts on each other.

Bisping continued the war of words at the pre-fight press conference this week, giving Belchar credit for his verbal effort, but letting him know what he thinks will happen:

"Alan Belcher, he's trying to take a page out of my book or he's trying to be Chael Sonnen. He's being someone very, very different for this fight. I'm not quite sure I understand it. He's trying to be all vocal, making video blogs and doing this and that, and he's trying to convince himself he's going to win the fight.

The reality of the situation is that his last fight he lost against Yushin Okami. Prior to that he was on a four-fight win streak. Now he's coming off a loss and he's co-main event. When he fought Yushin Okami he was a mid-card fighter, but now he's fighting me and he's co-main event.
